Ready for what ended up being quite the eventful evening, Viola Davis turned up as planned for the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (January 29). The 46-year-old big screen star worked the red carpet at the Shrine Exposition Center venue in a Marchesa frock with Jimmy Choo shoes before hitting the entrance ahead of the annual Tinseltown celebration of cinema. Among the esteemed winners, Miss Davis took home Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Leading Role honors while beating out Michelle Williams, Glenn Close, Meryl Streep and Tilda Swinton. Viola also joined her "The Help" castmates in collecting Best Picture accolades while the night saw Dick Van Dyke present Screen Actors Guild’s 48th Life Achievement Award to Mary Tyler Moore.

Gathering together to honor a few distinct individuals, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held their 3rd Annual Governors Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday night (November 12). Held at the Hollywood & Highland Grand Ballroom, the yearly event brought out a long list of stars including John Travolta with wife Kelly Preston, Evan Rachel Wood, Alec Baldwin and Maria Shriver. Other stars gracing the arrivals area before heading inside to take their seats at the ritzy soiree were Sharon Stone, Tilda Swinton, Viola Davis, Woody Harrelson, Diablo Cody, Melissa McCarthy, Shailene Woodley, Glenn Close and Seth Rogen. As for the esteemed honorees at the Governors Awards, the Board doted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to philanthropist Oprah Winfrey while presenting Honorary Awards unto actor James Earl Jones and makeup artist Dick Smith.

Broadcast and cable television networks waited all year patiently, and the time finally came Thursday morning for the Emmy Award nominations. And that wasn't the only news. A recent changed rule by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences increased the number of nominees in bigger categories so that new faces and series could also share the spotlight with Emmy veterans. 30 Rock" managed to get 22 nominations that included nominations for Tina Fey and Alex Baldwin. Mad Men" received 16 nominations that included nods for Jon Hamm and Elsabeth Moss. Comedy categories were picked up by Sarah Silverman, who was nominated for lead actress in a comedy series along with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tina Fey. Flight of Conchords" received nominations for outstanding comedy series while Family Guy" received a nomination for outstanding comedy-which is usually for live action shows. The Emmys will be handed out in Los Angeles on Sept. 20. Neil Patrick Harris will host the program.
