Taylor Swift vs. Miley Cyrus: Are They Role Models?

Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus have very different sounds (country vs. pop); different looks (blonde vs. brunette); and different philosophies on where they stand as celebrities. Cyrus - who most recently came under fire for making a joke about marijuana - has made it clear that she just wants to be a typical teenager whose occupation happens to make her rich and famous. “My job isn't to tell your kids how to act or how not to act because I'm still figuring that out myself," Miley told Harper's Bazaar a few months ago. “To take that away from me is a bit selfish. Your kids are going to make mistakes whether I do or not." Swift, conversely, is happy to embrace her status as a role model. She understands it comes with the territory. At the Billboard Women of the Year Awards on Friday, Taylor referenced Faith Hill in an interview with Katie Couric, saying: “For me, when Faith Hill performed on an awards show, everything mattered... everything she said said, did, wore I tried to copy it. That's what little girls do, so there is a big responsibility and I take it very seriously." Two artists. Two contrasting points of view. On whose side do you feel? Sure to be a spectacular showcase, the stars of country music are all set to put forth the 45th running of the annual Country Music Association Awards. It sounds like Jessica Simpson will be taking her country crooning elsewhere, as her reps have confirmed that she is no longer with the Sony Nashville label. There were many reports earlier today stating that the 28-year-old singer's name was clearly missing from Columbia Nashville and Sony Music Nashville Web sites. The Daisy Duke star also did not attend the Academy of Country Music Awards, even after announcing the nominees earlier this year. Miss Simpson does have an explanation, though. Her rep says, She was on load to Sony Nashville for her country album." Simpson recently brought country into her singing career but her rep says she is and has always been an Epic artist. She continues to be on Epic's label." Simpson's country debut, Do You Know," cam out at No. 1 on the Billboard country charts, yet only sold 172,876 copies as of February. The blonde bombshell has also been struggling this year, such as opening for Rascal Flatts, where she messed up many lines as well as forgetting some and receiving weight criticism. But Jessica still knows where her roots are from. I am a country girl. I grew up in Texas, and country music was what I listened to." The star also says that Martina McBride, Shania Twain and Faith Hill give her inspiration: I think there is a strength in female country artists."
